Ettore is actually a nice guy from Naples who has ended up in the Dux’ elite guard, popularly known as “The Pinkshirts”.  He doesn’t care much about religion or politics, he just wants to wear a cool uniform and impress the girls with his special-made Bugatti Torpedo.
