Was there ever any rule for the clergy regarding their choice of underwear?
B.T., I don’t know more about it than what I’ve learned from French and Italian movies… As far as I know, long pants were seen as controversial well into the mid-20th century. In the autobiography of an American ex-priest, he told about his studies in the 50’s at a Belgian seminary and that the Americans were seen as odd because they wore trousers under the cassocks. Apparently the Pope wears some sort of white leggings in winter, because it must get rather cold otherwise…
