Like mentioned before, Ginestra is surrounded by troops of the neighbouring countries, Italy and Yugoslavia. Both claim the city for themselves, but neither can have it without causing an international crisis. This story is loosely based on the actual situation in the city of Fiume (today: Rijeka) in the summer of 1920. but don’t expect historical accuracy! There are other comics for that experience.
Notes to this page: The doggie is a Karst Shepherd or kraševec. It was difficult to find representative pictures of the uniforms of the early army of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, so I lazily drew the soldiers wearing Serbian uniforms from WWI. The Italians have a little bit more accurate outfits, and the Ginestran Pinkshirts are wearing total fantasy costumes. Although if you google pictures of real-life Fiume legionaries, you will find pretty individualistic fashions, too…
